The Sherpa people live high in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal. They are known for their unequaled skill in mountaineering and are necessary for us regular people to make it through the mountains.
Sherpas have been there before and they know the way, but even when they haven't been there before they know how to traverse the difficult terrain to get you where you're going. They are navigational experts for the perilous Himalayan Mountains.
Wouldn't it be nice to have someone to guide you through all the pitfalls of health and fitness? We could all use a fitness Sherpa to keep us on the right path and get us to our destination quickly and safely. But it takes more than just someone to guide you.
You have to let go of your ego and let the Sherpa lead. Imagine what would happen if halfway through the treacherous journey you decided that you'd learned enough from your Sherpa that you tried to navigate the mountains by yourself? Seems pretty short-sighted.
What if at the beginning of the trip you helped the Sherpa load up the gear, you asked a couple of questions, and then took off on your adventure because "you've been on a hike before." How much more difficult would this be? Your chances of success? Probably zero.
Just because you'd done something similar before doesn't mean you're ready for this new thing. We all need to be willing to become a beginner and take on the "beginners mind." We have to put our ego behind us, admit that we don't know everything and find a Sherpa to show us the way and how to avoid the dangers of the journey.
At CrossFit 43 North our coaches are always trying to learn more and become better. We're here to help you navigate the pitfalls of nutrition and fitness. We truly want you to reach your goals and we know how to get you there but you have to ask for it and you have to listen and follow the advice you are given.
Now go live better.
