Where do you work? What do you do there?
I am the Vallivue High School Choir Director. I get to build relationships and teach high school kids through the art of music. I have been a music educator for ten years, teaching grades 6-12. I've worked for the Vallivue and Kuna School Districts. In that time I have taken students to Washington, D.C., Utah, and throughout Washington to perform and participate in choral events. I teach traditional choral music as well as vocal jazz. I love my job...most days. I get to invest in people and hopefully have a positive impact on their lives.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started crossfit in January 2016.
What is your favorite or best movement?
My favorite movement is not running or the airdyne:) I love doing handstands of any kind or using the rings. I also like the strict press and back squat.
What has been your favorite workout?
Partner work-outs are always fun. I also liked the burpee pull-up, kettle bell swing, push-up workout. I tend to like the workouts that use the arms. However, I gain more from the workouts that cater toward the legs.
What movement do you struggle with?
Hollow body rocks and double unders. Anything that involves legs...
What workout have you struggled the most physically?
Hollow body rocks, overhead squats, squat cleans.
What workout have you struggled the most mentally?
Muscle-ups and handstand push-ups. I feel like I should be able to do them but can't. The airdyne is always a mental challenge for me as well.
Why did you decide to start CrossFit?
I participated in a Friday Night Funk last Summer. I enjoyed how the workouts changed. I also enjoyed that though we were having fun we were getting a workout. For years Rob has tried to encourage me to be a part of something in order to get regular exercise. I joined a tumbling class last Spring and met some goals there. In doing that though, I realized that I could not do this forever and eventually I would get hurt. Along with that, there is only so far I can physically go and each week was the same. I like how each day with Crossfit is different, and I am learning new things and meeting or exceeding goals on a regular basis.
What is CrossFit to you?
Honestly I was scared to join at first because many people had negative comments or experiences with Crossfit. I'm also a bit stubborn and a perfectionist. I tend to not try things if I can't master them quickly, which is not a good way or a realistic way to go about life (I know). Crossfit has given me a different outlook on fitness, it is a journey. Crossfit has challenged me mentally and physically. I'm learning to work through my weakness both physically and mentally as I grow in strength and ability. I have had to accept defeat on occasion, but I've also been able to rejoice in many more triumphs. It's nice to not be alone in my journey as well. Working with others, where we are all on the same journey has been an encouragement in so many ways. I also feel better knowing that Clayton and Bridgett have got my back when it comes to safety, proper technique, and a boost of encouragement.
Along with all those benefits, it has become another way for my husband Rob and I to connect. We have been married for almost 12 years and have never shared a hobby. This is the first time ever we are doing something together. It has brought about great conversation and better health for our entire family.
